It's important to know when insurance can be applied to therapy for covering the associated expense.
How to Know If Insurance Covers Therapy in Chicago
If you are looking for a therapist who is covered by your insurance plan, there are several ways to find out if your chosen provider will be in the network. You can speak with the therapist directly about insurance options or look through the psychotherapists listed with your insurance company, among other things. Here are a few ways you can determine if your insurance covers therapy.
Ask Your Therapist Directly
Talking directly with any potential therapist or the staff of their organization is the easiest and most obvious way to figure out if your insurance can be applied. It’s helpful to be upfront with your therapist about this question and figure out what types of insurance they accept. This way, you won't need to worry about any surprise costs down the road, and they might be able to suggest other opportunities outside of your insurance to help you cover the cost, as well.
Check With Your Insurance Company
You should also check with your insurance company to ensure that they will cover therapy. Some plans have specific guidelines on what types of therapies are covered while others do not. For example, some insurance policies only cover certain types of therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), or only pay for services based on your diagnosis or severity of symptoms. Most policies will have a portal where you can see what’s included in your policy, but all too often, these lack clarity and specificity. If you are still unsure, reach out to your insurance company to make sure you’re clear on what types of counseling services are covered for you.
Does Insurance Cover Therapy at Wellington Counseling Group?
At WCG, we are fully committed to offering help to those who need it. We also understand the financial burden that comes with healthcare services. That's why we want to make it clear which kinds of insurance we accept.
Currently, Wellington Counseling Group is in-network for these insurance providers:
- Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO (Preferred)
- Blue Choice
- Aetna (at our Northbrook office only)

If you do not see your provider listed above, contact us for more information. We also help people access their out-of-network benefits from insurances not listed above, and these can sometimes be quite generous, depending on your plan. We also do all of the work on behalf of our patients; rather than simply offering you documentation to send in to your policy, we submit it all for you.
